If the church&rsquo;s ultimate task is to display God&rsquo;s glory, then the channels that He uses are the prayerful obedience of His Word manifested in expository preaching, biblical theology, the glorious gospel, genuine conversion,&nbsp; faithful evangelism, meaningful membership, loving discipline, discipleship together, and shepherding leadership. We&rsquo;ve studied what God says about each of these topics besides the last one and Lord-willing have sorted out from the biblical data how God intends for the church to be built up into Christ.<br /><br /> The next book of the Bible we&rsquo;ll study together is 2 Timothy. This is Paul&rsquo;s last will and testament to his disciple Timothy. It is the last recorded epistle the Holy Spirit left us of Paul&rsquo;s before Paul was executed by Nero and it urges Timothy to finish well as one entrusted with the rich treasure of the Gospel. <br /><br /> I&rsquo;d encourage you to read its four short chapters as many times as you possibly can to let its message of being entrusted with the Gospel penetrate your soul. It is the echo of regeneration (the work of the Spirit that makes a dead heart alive). The believer has a new direction: they have turned away from serving sin and turned to serving God. The classic New Hampshire Baptist Confession of Faith of 1833 defines conversion in Article VIII as:<br /><br /> &ldquo; We believe that Repentance and Faith are sacred duties, and also inseparable graces, wrought in our souls by the regenerating Spirit of God (Mark 1:15; Acts 11:18; Eph. 2:8; 1 John 5:1); whereby being deeply convinced of our guilt, danger, and helplessness, and of the way of salvation by Christ (John 16:8; Acts 2:37-38; 16:30-31), we turn to God with unfeigned contrition, confession, and supplication for mercy (Luke 18:13; 15:18-21; James 4:7-10; 2 Cor. 7:11; Rom. 10:12-13; Psa. 51); at the same time heartily receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our Prophet, Priest, and King, and relying on him alone as the only and all-sufficient Saviour (Rom. 10:9-11; Acts 3:22-23: Heb. 4:14; Psa. 2:6; Heb. 1:8; 8:25; 2 Tim. 1:12).&rdquo; <br /><br /> A new life means that there are new elements that make up that life. Summarizing Scripture, Dutch theologian Herman Bavinck points out seven new elements of conversion:<br /><br /> <em style="">1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </em><em style="">&ldquo;Illumination of the mind, whereby sin comes to be known in its true sense, as behavior displeasing to God.</em><br /><br /> <em style="">2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </em><em style="">Genuine sorrow for sin, not just remorse because of its bitter results.</em><br /><br /> <em style="">3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </em><em style="">Humble confession of sin, both to God and to others who were hurt by our sin.</em><br /><br /> <em style="">4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </em><em style="">Hatred of sin, including a deliberate resolve to flee from it.</em><br /><br /> <em style="">5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </em><em style="">A return to God as our gracious Father in Christ, in faith that he can and will forgive our sins.</em><br /><br /> <em style="">6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </em><em style="">A wholehearted joy in God through Christ.</em><br /><br /> <em style="">7.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </em><em style="">Genuine love for God and others, together with delight in God&rsquo;s service.&rdquo;</em><br /><br /></div>]]></content:encoded></item><item><title><![CDATA[Update]]></title><link><![CDATA[http://www.southhopechurch.com/1/post/2012/03/no-title.html]]></link><comments><![CDATA[http://www.southhopechurch.com/1/post/2012/03/no-title.html#comments]]></comments><pubDate>Wed, 21 Mar 2012 22:10:25 -0500</pubDate><category><![CDATA[Uncategorized]]></category><guid isPermaLink="false">http://www.southhopechurch.com/1/post/2012/03/no-title.html</guid><description><![CDATA[It was a humbling time in the Word last Sunday being reminded of what Christ willingly experienced to bring many sons to glory as the inheritance offered Him by His Father. &nbsp; To think about the Son standing joyfully in the middle of those He made righteous and offering them to His Father as forever residents of the Kingdom is amazing. Unfathomable mercy and grace. It made participation in the Lord's Supper more meaningful against the backdrop of Psalm 22 and Hebrews 2. The Word of God illumines the mind as the Spirit works.&nbsp;<br /><br />The time Sunday evening was refreshing as well. It was nice for a change in the routine and capped off a great day. Thank you for all who came to the concert at WRBC. The music was edifying and your attendance was an encouragement to all who were there. Though you might not be aware, &nbsp;I know it encouraged Pastor English too.<br /><br />This Sunday we will begin a new mini-series on several marks of a healthy church. Mark #1 is expositional preaching. I'll explain why on Sunday.<br /><br />Please be in prayer for the MC Hoops dinner on Friday at 6pm. Many parents and players will be there and during that time I'll be presenting the two ways to live.If you have signed up and are planning to come, please mingle and be especially friendly and welcome these folks as guests. Introduce yourself, show interest in their lives, and love them as our neighbors. This is a ministry opportunity for us.<br /><br />Finally, remember our member's meeting Sunday evening after the service. If you didn't pick up a sheet explaining more about the Buttram's in preparation for it please grab one off the foyer table. We'll vote&nbsp;on paper&nbsp;on the&nbsp;motion recommended by the mission committee. If you have any questions, please direct them to myself, Sherwood Young, and the other members of the missions committee.<br /><br />Enjoy the spring weather!PJ</div> ]]></content:encoded></item><item><title><![CDATA[One to One Bible Reading Questions]]></title><link><![CDATA[http://www.southhopechurch.com/1/post/2012/03/one-to-one-bible-reading-questions.html]]></link><comments><![CDATA[http://www.southhopechurch.com/1/post/2012/03/one-to-one-bible-reading-questions.html#comments]]></comments><pubDate>Sun, 11 Mar 2012 14:06:07 -0500</pubDate><category><![CDATA[Uncategorized]]></category><guid isPermaLink="false">http://www.southhopechurch.com/1/post/2012/03/one-to-one-bible-reading-questions.html</guid><description><![CDATA[You can't read the different kinds of literature in the Bible the same way. The book is short, succinct, and simple, and opens up to the reader the delightful gift of prayer given to the believer by the God of heaven. The book is broken down into eight chapters as follows:<br /><br /> 1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>The Life of Prayer</strong><br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; McIntyre lays out the Scriptural implication that God&rsquo;s people will pray as their new natures cry out for the living God.<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It is the mark of a true believer to pray to his Father through the Son by the Holy Spirit. <br /><br /> 2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong style="">The Equipment</strong><br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The equipment for prayer consists of <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; a quiet place, <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; a quiet hour, <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; and a quiet heart. <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The quiet heart is confident in the acceptance <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; before the Father <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; through the sacrifice of Christ, <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; the enabling grace of the Holy Spirit, <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; and the steadying text of Scripture.<br /><br /> 3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>The Direction of the Mind</strong><br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Our attitude as we approach God is to <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; realize the presence of God, <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; deal honestly with Him in His presence, <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; draw near to Him in faith <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; believing no miracle is impossible <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and believing we are praying to our Father in Christ&rsquo;s authority.<br /><br /> 4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>The Engagement: Worship</strong><br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Our prayers are to praise the Lord in<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; acknowledgment of daily mercies,<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;thanksgiving for the great redemption,<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; or contemplation of&nbsp; our Father&rsquo;s perfections.<br /><br /> 5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>The Engagement: Confession</strong><br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Confession of sin is the first act of an awakened sinner and the first mark of a gracious spirit. <br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Confession is explicit and balanced with the love of Christ that swallows up sin in a measureless ocean of peace and grace.<br /><br /> 6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>The Engagement: Request</strong><br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The prayer of faith that has been brought into conformity with the mind of Christ is<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; subject to the Father&rsquo;s will,<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; restrained within the interest of Christ,<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; instructed in the truth,<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; energized by the Spirit,<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; interwoven with love and mercy,<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; accompanied with obedience,<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; so earnest it will not accept denial,<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; and seeks an answer.<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The prayer of faith is restricted to the Word of God and rests on the character of God.<br /><br /> 7.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>The Hidden Riches of the Secret Place<br /></strong><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Fellowship with God discovers the excellence of His character, and by beholding Him the soul is transformed as the habit of prayerfulness produces<br /><br /> &middot;&nbsp;&nbsp; ">The doctrine of Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone) means that the food that is to feed our souls is to be the Word of God only. You may notice that there is much Scripture in our worship service and when the time to listen to the sermon arrives, the Word of God is usually presented verse by verse from whole books of the Bible. Occasionally there will be a topical sermon, but the general diet of our family's spiritual feeding time is expositional preaching and teaching. There is many reason for this. Timothy Witmer lists ten reasons for preaching verse by verse through books of the Bible in his book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Shepherd-Leader-Achieving-Effective-Shepherding/dp/1596381310" target="_blank" title="">The Shepherd Leader</a>:<br><ol><li><b>It identifies exactly what is the heart of the Christian message.</b> (The sheep need the food the Good Shepherd gives in the inspired Word.)</li><li><b>It requires that the shepherd concern himself with the intent of the Divine author for every text.</b> (God had a purpose for each part of Scripture.)</li><li><b>It respects the integrity of the textual units given through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.</b> (Teach each books as it was meant to be taught rather than chopping it up.)</li><li><b>It keeps the pastor from riding his favorite hobby horses.</b> (Provides a balanced diet.)</li><li><b>It challenges the pastor to preach through the "difficult" or obscure texts and "challenging" truths of the Bible.</b> (Christians need to learn how to think through passages that people like to avoid.)</li><li><b>Expository preaching will encourage both pastor and congregation alike to become students of the Bible. </b>(Working through books of the Bible helps to know what to look for and how to apply the Word in our on lives.)</li><li><b>Expository preaching gives us boldness in preaching, for we are not expounding our own fallible views but the Word of God.</b> (God's promises are linked to His Word and not our 'wisdom.')</li><li>It gives confidence to the listener that what he is hearing is not the opinion of man but the Word of God. (God has spoken. Our job is to declare what God has said.)</li><li>It is of great assistance in sermon planning. (Breaking down the book into connected units of thought takes a lot of pressure off of planning a series.)</li><li>It provides the context for a long tenure in a particular place. (It takes a long time to preach through the whole counsel of God.)</li></ol></div> ]]></content:encoded></item><item><title><![CDATA[The Ministry of the Pew]]></title><link><![CDATA[http://www.southhopechurch.com/1/post/2012/01/the-ministry-of-the-pew.html]]></link><comments><![CDATA[http://www.southhopechurch.com/1/post/2012/01/the-ministry-of-the-pew.html#comments]]></comments><pubDate>Fri, 27 Jan 2012 12:22:46 -0500</pubDate><category><![CDATA[Uncategorized]]></category><guid isPermaLink="false">http://www.southhopechurch.com/1/post/2012/01/the-ministry-of-the-pew.html</guid><description><![CDATA[ Last Sunday evening I shared from Ephesians 1-3 what God has done for us through the work of Christ a [...] ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<div ><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:10px;text-align:left"> <a> <img src="http://www.southhopechurch.com/uploads/4/8/2/3/4823527/332337360.jpg?1327684931" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> <div class="paragraph editable-text" style=" text-align: left; ">Last Sunday evening I shared from Ephesians 1-3 what God has done for us through the work of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. We then looked in Ephesians 4 to see why He has done this for us; the reason he has saved us. At the end I mentioned an article I've recently read by Colin Marshall called "The Ministry of the Pew." It would be beneficial for you to read the article below and ask how you can better serve others in a simple way on Sunday morning. Obviously we are to be servants all the time, but here's some specific applications for our Sunday morning time together.&nbsp;</div> <div > <div id="doc_79599464" style="padding:20px 0"></div> <script type="text/javascript"> if (!window.scribd_js_loaded) { window.scribd_js_loaded = true; document.write("<script type=\"text/javascript\" src=\"http://www.scribd.com/javascripts/view.js\"></scr"+"ipt>"); } </script> <script type="text/javascript"> var scribd_doc_79599464 = scribd.Document.getDoc(79599464, "key-27xg6ij0d1kq1wnvacbd"); scribd_doc_79599464.addParam("jsapi_version", 1); scribd_doc_79599464.addParam("height", 750); scribd_doc_79599464.write("doc_79599464"); </script> </div> ]]></content:encoded></item></channel></rss>
